If you’re a family member, friend or loved one of someone who has a problem with drugs or alcohol, it can be a scary thing to watch the person you love fall into a downward spiral as they are gripped by addiction.

But did you know that as the loved one of an addict, you need just as much support as the person with the addiction?

Australia Counselling recently spoke with Vancouver addictions expert Candace Plattor about how the loved ones of an addict can get such support.

In this interview she shares:

  • What is an addiction, what is a habit and how do you tell the difference?
  • How to know if you or someone you love has an addiction.
  • Whether an addiction can be overcome with will power or if it’s a biological disease that some people never recover from.
  • Some of your options for treatment if you think you have an addiction.
  • How to talk to a loved one about their relationship with drugs or alcohol if you’re concerned about their use.
  • What is enabling and how to know if you’re enabling someone.
  • What an enabler can do to stop the enabling cycle.
