Scott D. Miller, Ph.D is a researcher and psychologist who is interested in the efficacy of psychotherapy and how therapists can achieve clinical excellence with their clients.

Dr Miller  is the founder of the International Center for Clinical Excellence an international consortium of clinicians, researchers, and educators dedicated to promoting excellence in behavioural health services. Dr. Miller conducts workshops and training in the United States and abroad, helping hundreds of agencies and organisations, both public and private, to achieve superior results.

Here are some startling facts Dr Miller and his colleagues have found from extensive research of therapeutic outcomes:

  • attending a workshop to learn a specialised approach in treating a specific problem or learning a new treatment model does little to improve therapeutic effectiveness
  • client dropout from therapy continues at around 47%
  • every 10th person who enters therapy leaves worse off than they when they entered therapy
  • there is little difference in outcomes whether therapy is practiced by experienced professionals, students or early career professionals

But it’s not all doom and gloom. The good news is Dr Miller has lots of great ideas about how we can achieve clinical excellence.
