A History of the Sydney North Shore

The primary residential area of Northern metropolitan Sydney in South Wales, Australia is informally known as North Shore. This term refers to the suburbs located on the north shore of Sydney Harbour. This area lies between Middle Harbour and the Lane Cove right up to the northern border of Ku-ring-gai local government area. The boundaries of this area are ill-defined and it roughly encompasses the suburbs that are west to the Ryde Bridge. However this description also roughly includes the Northern Suburbs.

The Lower North Shore in the areas of Mosman and southern Willoughby was home to Gorualgal before the British settled there. It was also home to the Cammeraygal in the areas of North Sydney and Eastern Lane Cove before the British settlement.

When Sydney was eventually established in 1788, the settlement in the area of North Shore of the Harbour was quite scant. James Milson was one of the first settlers in the area and he settled in the vicinity of Jeffery Street in Kirribilli opposite Sydney Cove. The reasons for the limited settlement were many. Most importantly, the North Shore was more rugged than the southern shore and the Western areas had limited agricultural potential. Tree felling, boat building and orchard farming in areas with better soil were the early activities in the area. In the 1890s the North Shore Line was built. It was only after the completion of the Sydney Harbour bridge in 1932, that access to Sydney CBD located on the southern shore was made easier. This also triggered the development of suburbs on the North Shore.

The Four local governments that stand in the area are basically derived from the Parish of Willoughby. This is proved by the Cumberland County mapping from 1792 to 1894. It was from the Parish of Willoughby that the City of Willoughby was derived along with the municipalities of Mosman, Lane cove and North Sydney. St. Leonards was also the former name of North Sydney.
